Missy Hilton takes first place in Toastmasters International division speech contest

PARK CITY, Utah (May 2, 2011) – Competing in the third tier of Toastmaster International’s speech contest, Missy Hilton of the Park City club was awarded first place in the most recent division competition on Saturday in Salt Lake City.

Her poignant seven-minute speech captivated the audience and judges as she told stories about how just a few spoken words of discouragement or encouragement have meant success, failure and even led to death in her family. She competed against four other Salt Lake City area contestants who had also won at their club and area-level competition to compete at the division-level.

“The brevity of a Toastmaster speech requires that you convey a message that is concise, organized and impactful in just a few minutes. Once you’ve mastered the delivery a seven-minute speech, you have the speaking skills to truly influence an audience, and Missy’s speech does just that. She has worked incredibly hard in this competition to improve her speech, and it’s paying off. We are very proud of her,” said Tracy Harden, president of the Park City Toastmasters Club.

Hilton has been a member of Toastmasters for the past two-and-a-half years and has completed two education tracks and serves as the V.P. of public relations for the club. She is also a producer for KPCW’s The Mountain Life program and is a professional writer.

On May 14Hilton will be competing in the District 15 speech competition in Ogden, which encompasses 91 clubs from a large geographical area spanning Utah, Southern Idaho, Eastern Oregon, Northern Nevada and Western Wyoming.
